10/22/2002 - emWare, the leading provider of device networking and remote device management solutions, announced that it has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,467,084, entitled "Systems and Methods for Reprogramming an Embedded Device with Program Code Using Relocatable Program Code."
This patented technology allows companies to offer products that enable users to add new features and services to their devices after they have purchased them. For example, a cell phone manufacturer could provide a basic set of built-in functions, but allow its customers to add optional product features such as an organizer, address book or games later on.
The "Systems and Methods for Reprogramming an Embedded Device with Program Code Using Relocatable Program Code" patent describes a system for provisioning products by allowing users to add software modules to embedded devices after they have been put into service. Currently available device flash updates rely on replacing the entire program image with a revised image. This process can disrupt existing configurations and software. emWare’s Distributed Program Relocation technology allows new components to be added to a device at any time without requiring a complete rebuild of a program image. This ability facilitates deployment of embedded software where there is a great variety of feature configurations or third-party software providers.
This recent patent bolsters emWare’s intellectual property portfolio, which already includes U.S. Patent No. 6,363,417: "Device Interfaces for Networking a Computer and an Enhanced Embedded Device," U.S. Patent No. 6,370,436: "Distributed Objects for a Computer System," U.S. Patent Number 6,219,677: "Split File System" and U.S. Patent Number 5,991,795: "Communication System and Methods Using Dynamic Expansion for Computer Networks."
