New Agilent Technologies RouterTester Tools First to Evaluate Metro/edge IP Routers for 99.999 Percent Performance Reliability

10/22/2002 - Agilent Technologies announced new RouterTester tools designed to assist service providers in evaluating the ability of core network and metro/edge IP routers to deliver 99.999 percent performance reliability.

Recently, leading IP equipment manufacturers have offered a variety of approaches to meet this standard, established by traditional voice and data networks, without requiring redundant routers in all key network locations. This reliability is equivalent to five minutes or less of downtime per operating year, which can result in significant cost savings for service providers and their customers.

Network equipment upgrades have been identified as the single biggest cause of network outages. In addition, downtime can be caused by power failures, hardware faults and software bugs. Each year, network outages cost U.S. companies tens of millions of dollars. As a result, service providers have established rigorous requirements for continuous IP router operation, system reboots, system changeovers and "hitless" upgrades to ensure system performance.

"Every current survey of service provider requirements has confirmed that network operators expect IP routers to match the reliability of legacy network equipment, particularly if they are intended to eventually carry real-time packet voice traffic," said Bill Wood, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Advanced Networks Division. "In addition, truly resilient routing offers service providers significant potential savings by eliminating the need for two routers at every network point of presence."

Agilent will provide a library of pre-written automated test applications for RouterTester that evaluate non-stop forwarding, graceful restart, hitless restart, non-stop routing and MPLS fast reroute technologies. This library of test cases permits users to measure and compare routing redundancy alternatives and benchmark actual router performance under a wide variety of network and traffic conditions. In addition, six resiliency test cases developed for Agilent's "Journal of Internet Test Methodologies" will be available for download at

The automated test applications for RouterTester will be available later this month and will be free to customers with the purchase of any RouterTester product or with subscription to the RouterTester software enhancement service. Agilent is also offering a free white paper titled "Demystifying and Evaluating Non-Stop Routing" and a series of free educational customer seminars on this topic later this year in Europe and in the U.S. early in 2003. Copies of the white paper and further information on the seminar series are available at
