10/18/2002 - iAnywhere Solutions, a subsidiary of Sybase, announced that it has been selected by international services and solutions group CMG to provide its mobile database technology to assist in creating the first mobile train ticketing service to Dutch public transportation company, NoordNed. The solution, which will run for six months initially starting September 2002, has been developed using iAnywhere Solutions SQL AnywhereÒ Studio small database UltraLite, and MobiLink, for bi-directional data synchronization. These technologies support the iAnywhere Solutions "always available" m-Business architecture.
Artie Jasperse, iAnywhere Solutions, commented: "iAnywhere Solutions was approached by CMG as it needed a reliable solution that could ensure robust synchronization between NoordNed’s central database and the conductor’s mobile devices. We have supplied our innovative SQL Anywhere Studio ultra-small database, UltraLite, that resides on the mobile device, and MobiLink, which provides scaleable and high performance data synchronization between the user and the central database.
"These combined provide an m-Business solution that is both quick and customer friendly. Robustness and reliability were key, as failure to correctly synchronize data on tickets purchased to the conductor would potentially damage perceptions of quality customer service which was key to the project."
NoordNed Personenvervoer BV is a young transport company that focuses heavily on customer service. It aims to use the first six-month period as an opportunity for its customers to trial the service and find out how easy it is to book tickets through the m-ticket service. The project, which is being managed by CMG, allows customers to buy m-tickets online or via a voice response system. Once the tickets have been booked, the user is sent an SMS message with a confirmation reference number. The train conductor, using a handheld device, then validates this number, shown on the passenger’s mobile phone when the passenger travels. Prior to the journey, a conductor synchronizes his handheld device with head office in order to receive the confirmation reference numbers for all tickets purchased for his particular routes that day, hence the devices are not clogged with data on tickets not applicable for that conductor’s journeys.
Martijn Hunteler, CMG, concluded; "The project is the first of its kind in the Dutch public ticketing area and we believe it is the way forward for many companies in this area. Using a reliable wireless solution, companies are able to become more competitive as they offer their customers a more convenient service whilst still retaining a healthy return on investment."
The pilot of the Mobile Ticket Service will be held with 500 customers who travel regularly on the participating NoordNed sections.
