10/18/2002 - ARTiSAN Software Tools, a global leader for UML-based, real-time systems and software modeling tools, and KnowGravity, an International team of experts in system and software engineering, announced that their Real-time Studio Professional / CASSANDRA/xUML tool chain is being used on the International Union of Railways' Euro-Interlocking Project. The tool chain consists of the modeling of UML specifications within Real-time Studio and the immediate execution and validation of the model within CASSANDRA/xUML, even prior to code generation. Validation and execution of UML specifications at a high level of abstraction is perfectly aligned with the Object Management Group's Model Driven Architecture (MDA) initiative.
Markus Schacher, a founder of KnowGravity, commented: "The functionality of the system can be tested as soon as specified, long before the first line of code has been written. This allows debugging on the high abstraction level of a UML model instead of on the level of a specific programming language. Furthermore, the built-in regression tester allows the recording of manual test sequences and thus the complete automation of specification-tests. The CASSANDRA/xUML simulation environment was developed to support railway signaling systems, and will provide an excellent environment for the analysis of any control behavior, from military command and control systems to power-plant automation. This analysis is particularly valuable for systems where safety or reliability is a concern, in order to demonstrate that the system behavior meets its design constraints."
Jeremy Goulding, President and CEO of ARTiSAN Software added: "The Real-time Studio and CASSANDRA/xUML tool chain is being productively used on the Euro-Interlocking Project to validate the correctness of UML specifications for safety-critical railway interlocking systems, and both ARTiSAN and KnowGravity are pleased to be among of the first companies providing a true Model Driven Architecture solution in the real-time embedded market, especially on such a large project. This integration is a powerful addition to the toolbox of any systems engineer, and adds to the already impressive modeling and documentation capabilities of Real-time Studio. It is also an excellent example of the openness of Real-time Studio and the use of the OLE Automation interface."
"OMG continues to see impressive design wins with astounding productivity gains from projects implementing an MDA strategy, and this one will be no exception, " remarked Richard Soley, Chairman and CEO of the Object Management Group." This latest solution from ARTiSAN and KnowGravity shows that OMG's Model Driven Architecture is the right way to build systems that work and respond quickly to changing infrastructure requirements, such as the International Union of Railways' Euro-Interlocking Project."
Real-time Studio is currently the only modeling tool with which CASSANDRA/xUML can provide an executable UML specification. Integration with other CASE tools is planned. CASSANDRA/xUML as well as the underlying CASSANDRA platform are available at no cost from KnowGravity. In cooperation with ARTiSAN, KnowGravity offers an xUML Starter Kit that proves the advantages of xUML on a real customer example as an "all-included" package for an unbeatable price. CASSANDRA/xUML will be made available to the general market in November 2002.
