Atmel Ships the Industry's First 512K-bit 2-Wire Serial EEPROM Device in 8 lead TSSOP Package

10/16/2002 - Atmel® announced the introduction of industry's first 512K-bit device in an 8 lead TSSOP (4.4mm) package. As the technology leader and the largest manufacturer of Serial EEPROMs worldwide (1), Atmel offers the industry's widest product Portfolio of Serial EEPROMs & FLASH in 2-wire, SPI and 3-wire protocols. The AT24C512 is the latest part of this family of devices that uses Atmel's advanced EEPROM technology which makes it possible to fit a 512K- bit EEPROM part in an 8 lead TSSOP (4.4mm) package. Fitting a large memory in such a small and thin package has always been a challenge in the past. The AT24C512 was developed and accepted as the next generation Serial EEPROM of choice by many mobile phone OEMs. With the introduction of the TSSOP package, it will enable many of the mobile phone manufacturers to reduce their board space as well offer new models that are slimmer and lighter.

The AT24C512 will be used to store frequently dialed numbers, last numbers called, and other associated memory functions. Additional applications include pagers, set-top boxes, data bank watches, game cards, digital cameras, PDAs and other portable consumer applications.

The AT24C512 in TSSOP is the latest part being designed and accepted by Samsung Electronics, the world's number one CDMA manufacturer and third overall in mobile phones. "Samsung has gained market share in 2002 due to innovative products being launched first to market," said a spokesman for the mobile communication division at Samsung Electronics." Atmel's capability to fit high density Serial EEPROMs in miniaturized packages such as TSSOP has helped Samsung being first to market with cell phones that are smaller, lighter and with added features" added the Samsung spokesman.

"Offering a 512K-bit 2-wire Serial EEPROM device in an 8 lead TSSOP is another industry first from Atmel," said Bassam Khoury, Atmel's Marketing Director for the Serial Interface Product Line. "Our customers have grown accustomed to expect the largest density of Serial EEPROM in industry's smallest packages to be available from Atmel. We have responded and delivered a 512K-bit in 8 lead TSSOP using our leading edge technology which is the key to further strengthen our position as a world leader in the market," concluded Khoury.

The AT24C512 provides data transfer rates up to 400kHz, operates from 2.7V to 5.5V, guaranteed endurance of 100,000 write/erase cycles, and has data retention of greater than 40 years.

The AT24C512 in 8 lead TSSOP is available now in volume production. Prices start at $2.20 each in quantities of 10,000.
