10/15/2002 - Marimba and InstallShield Software announced they will host a seminar in London on Windows migration issues. A guest speaker from industry research and advisory firm IDC will discuss how corporate enterprises can lower Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP migration and management costs by implementing desktop management solutions and best practices.
During the half-day session, Marimba, InstallShield, and a featured analyst from IDC will present and discuss current industry trends, operating system migrations, Windows Installer (MSI) migrations, and ongoing application management challenges.

In organizations that use electronic software deployment, software applications are specifically packaged for each operating system. Migrating software applications from Windows 9x/NT for use on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, requires that every application be repackaged again for use in the new operating environment. Additionally, in Windows 2000, Microsoft introduced the Windows Installer technology to improve system management and lower total cost of ownership. Windows Installer requires that applications be packaged in the .MSI format in order to realize manageability gains. For these two reasons, repackaging applications into the Windows Installer format is a crucial step within the Windows 2000 and Windows XP migration process.
