Concept Development Video Imaging System Uses PLX Technology PCI 9056

10/8/2002 - PLX Technology and Concept Development announced use of the PLX® PCI 9056 I/O Accelerator chip to upgrade a variety of CDI video-imaging systems to 66Mhz speeds. The most-advanced 32-bit general-purpose bus-mastering PCI device available, the PCI 9056 is providing CDI with unprecedented design flexibility and full 66MHz operation in upgrading those systems, which were designed originally with 33Mhz PLX PCI devices.

CDI had originally used the 32-bit PLX PCI 9060 I/O Accelerator device for its designs. The company then upgraded to the more-advanced PCI 9080 I/O Accelerator chips for the board designs, featuring bus-mastering and other features system designers were demanding for new designs. Now, CDI is again upgrading those same designs to 66MHz operation and taking advantage of the software-migration features of PLX PCI devices that helps designers and manufacturers preserve their investments in existing designs.

"PLX has done a magnificent job at maintaining host driver code compatibility through three generations of PCI bridges," said Loic Bioche, director of engineering at CDI. "Driver code written for the PCI 9060 ran without a change on the PCI 9080, and we had the same success migrating from the PCI 9080 to the PCI 9056. Very few players in this industry have seen clearly where the industry and the corresponding needs were heading, and PLX is one of them."

High-Bandwidth 32-bit, 66MHz PCI I/O Acceleration
The PCI 9056 is the most advanced, 32-bit general-purpose PCI bus-mastering device available for the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) MPC 850/860 PowerQUICC® processor, the industry's leading 32-bit processor for communications applications, as well as generic 32-bit, 66MHz local bus-based designs. The PCI 9056 provides direct connection to the MPC850/860 PowerQUICC, resulting in faster design cycles while making full use of the processors' capabilities in embedded and adapter products. Through a strapping option, the PCI 9056 also provides direct connection to two generic 32-bit, 66MHz local buses. One bus has multiplexed address and data buses, the other has de-multiplexed address and data buses. Because of their simplicity and high-performance, these generic buses have been embraced by the industry as de facto industry standards for connection to a wide variety of devices including processors, memory, DSPs, custom ASICs, and FPGAs.

The PCI 9056 incorporates PLX's Data Pipe ArchitectureTM technology, featuring DMA engines, programmable direct master and direct slave data transfer modes, and PCI messaging functions. Additionally, the PCI 9056 offers register-set compatibility with the PLX PCI 9054 32-bit, 33MHz I/O Accelerator, enabling designers to upgrade their current designs to the PCI 9056 with minimal effort and thereby protecting software investment and minimizing long-term development costs.
