10/3/2002 - Fujitsu Computer Products of America (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, announced it has received a "Meritorious Performance" award from Sun Microsystems as a top supplier of hard disk drive (HDD) products for Sun's enterprise storage solutions during fiscal year 2002.
The Sun Supplier Performance awards, which were announced this week, honor achievements in the areas of supplier cost effectiveness, quality, availability and technology.
Kevin Carroll, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Vice President for Supplier Management said: "Fujitsu Computer Products really came through for Sun and set itself above others in their category. The Supplier Awards are our way of publicly recognizing outstanding performance among the companies that contribute to Sun's strategies and to improving customer satisfaction."
"It is a special honor to achieve this distinction from Sun Microsystems, which is clearly one of the world's preeminent enterprise storage companies," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, OEM sales, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "We see this not only as continued evidence of our efforts to become the world leader in enterprise HDD solutions, but as validation that those efforts are being noticed by key customers."
The Sun award is the latest in a string of landmark successes for Fujitsu hard drives. Earlier this year, Fujitsu introduced its MAP and MAS series enterprise HDD products, which feature capacities up to 147GB, spindle speeds of 10K and 15K RPM, interfaces such as SCSI and Fibre Channel, and twice the areal density of previous similar Fujitsu HDD products . all in a 1-inch-high, 3.5-inch form factor.
In May, Fujitsu announced new read head and media technologies that will enable HDD recording densities of up to 300 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in2), less than a year after Fujitsu announced record-setting 100Gb/in2 technology.
In addition, Fujitsu's 15,000 RPM MAM hard drive received the CRN Ultimate PC award in the category of hard disk/performance at CMP's Tech Builder XChange event in May.
Fujitsu also showcased the industry's first 2.5" hard disk drive with Serial ATA (SATA) architecture at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Jose, Calif., underscoring Fujitsu's commitment to the SATA interface as an eventual replacement of the Parallel ATA interface. Fujitsu is the only HDD vendor with 2.5" form factor HDD products that support the Serial ATA interface and is currently shipping sample drives to strategic partners.

Pace-setting technologies, high- reliability/performance computing and telecommunications platforms, and a worldwide corps of systems and services experts make Fujitsu uniquely positioned to unleash the infinite possibilities of the broadband Internet to help its customers succeed.
