10/1/2002 - TimesTen announced the general availability of version 4.5 of its infrastructure software product, the TimesTen® Real-Time Event Processing System. TimesTen's system enables applications to process massive transaction volumes and respond instantly to requests-a fundamental requirement of business-critical applications in telecom and networking, financial services, travel and logistics, and real-time enterprises. The main enhancements in version 4.5 include a doubling of throughput for distributed, replicated configurations, increased sophistication and performance for event notifications, and an RDBMS adapter for extending TimesTen's real-time performance to Oracle data.
TimesTen's focus over the last year has been in support of high-volume billing and mediation systems in the telecom market, and trading infrastructures for Wall Street firms. These applications have similarly rigorous and sophisticated real-time event processing requirements-where information must be captured, stored, used, and distributed in real-time, while preserving transactional integrity and continuous availability. The enhancements in TimesTen 4.5 address a growing installed-base and deployments in these demanding real-time event processing environments. TimesTen's customer base now exceeds 160 organizations worldwide.
Highlights of TimesTen 4.5
Throughput Increase for Replicated Configurations
With this release of TimesTen, updates to data can be replicated to other TimesTen systems roughly twice as fast as previously. A majority of TimesTen's customers deploy multiple servers with TimesTen, and use change replication between them for both load sharing and high-availability failover protection. When network transfers are introduced into any system, the overhead of the network will diminish the effective throughput. With TimesTen, network overhead is particularly noticeable given the very fast rate at which the product can process transactions. With version 4.5, the value of a distributed configuration, as measured in transactions per dollar of hardware and software invested, could increase by as much as 100%.
Sophisticated Event Notification
Version 4.5 adds a materialized view feature, to which TimesTen's existing event notification API can be attached, giving users the ability to more easily define and monitor sophisticated events occurring within the system. A materialized view pulls together in one place data and calculated results related to specific events upon which actions might be taken. An application using TimesTen's event notification features only needs to monitor update records that are of interest from a single materialized view. Without a materialized view, the application would have to monitor all of the update records from all of the underlying tables, including records reflecting updates to rows and columns of no interest to the application. For example, notification may be desirable when:
RDBMS Adapter for Oracle
This facility replicates portions of an Oracle database into TimesTen for real-time processing, and automatically maintains consistent updates between Oracle and TimesTen, in both directions. Through this RDBMS adapter, TimesTen can be used as a cache to pull forward information such as subscriber profiles, against which real-time requests can be validated. This also enables real-time information to be captured in TimesTen and propagated to Oracle, as it's no longer needed for real-time processing. Although TimesTen is usually configured as a stand-alone data manager, a significant percentage of TimesTen's customers also integrate their real-time processing in TimesTen with back-office RDBMS functions.
Additional New Features
Version 4.5 adds additional features requested by customers, such as a sequence number generator to guarantee unique key values, performance increases on multi-row read, update, insert, and delete operations, and dynamic replication reconfiguration.
"In tough economic times, companies seek ways to lower their cost structures and distinguish their products and services from their competitors," said James R. Groff, CEO of TimesTen, Inc. "TimesTen 4.5 contributes to both causes. The enhancements in this version were designed in close collaboration with world-class customers, which is one of the reasons our real-time event processing system continues to gain popularity."
TimesTen 4.5 supports Sun Solaris, Linux, Windows, HP-UX, IBM AIX, and LynxOS.
